HMRC’s online payment service now live
HMRC’s online service to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) through Pay As You Earn (PAYE) is now live. The service was announced at the Spring Statement 2025 and aims to reduce the need for some taxpayers to complete self assessment solely to settle the charge.

Government borrowing rises in September
Official figures show that UK government borrowing reached £20.2 billion in September – the highest for the month in five years. The figures, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), underline the financial pressures facing the Chancellor as preparations continue for the Budget.
Borrowing, which measures the gap between government spending and income from taxes, was £1.6 billion higher than in September last year. The ONS said that although the government raised more through taxes and National Insurance, this was outweighed by higher spending, particularly on debt interest and inflation-linked costs.

HMRC R&D eligibility checker
HMRC has launched an online checker to help businesses judge whether their projects meet the definition of research and development before they file a claim. The tool has been designed to reduce errors for incorrect claims. However, this is not mandatory and the results of this test is not binding. Instead, it gives a bit of insight as to whether the company may wish to pursue a R&D claim.
