Update to HMRC VAT Notice 701/30 on Education

HMRC issue an update to the VAT Notice 701/30 on Education to include an explanation of the treatment of funds taken from the new apprenticeship service account to pay external providers for apprenticeship training.

HMRC have issued an update to the VAT Notice 701/30 on “Education and Vocational Training” to include an explanation of the treatment of funds taken from the new apprenticeship service account to pay external providers for apprenticeship training, which comes into effect from 1 May 2017.

This VAT Notice provides one of the key sources of reference information on VAT relating to educational matters undertaken by academy schools.

•	Adjust payroll systems for accurate processing
•	Clearly communicate any changes to employees⚠️ Important to note:
This is an advisory rate — organisations are not required to adopt 55p per mile.
•	If you choose to pay less than 55p, employees may be able to claim tax relief on the difference via HMRC
•	If you pay more than the advisory rate, there may be tax and NIC implications👩‍💼 For employees:
•	Potential to claim additional tax relief if reimbursed below the advisory rate
•	Greater awareness of how mileage payments impact take-home pay💼 Also worth noting:
Self-employed individuals using the simplified mileage method will benefit from the uplift from 45p to 55p, helping better reflect the real cost of business travel.✅ As always, staying compliant with HMRC guidance and keeping policies under regular review is key.
